Every year, around Father’s Day, I take my Mom to a ranch in Montana… ♥️🌲🐴☕️
Some years have been harder than others, but I know that spending quality time together and doing something to spoil Mom would be how Dad would have wanted us to spend “his” day.
At E Bar L Ranch, we get to witness everything Dad stood for in action: community, gathering around the table (or the campfire), turning strangers into friends in record time, reconnecting - with yourself, with others, with nature, with the things that sometimes get lost when you have good Wi-Fi or cell service…
Dad was fed by people, learning, being insatiably curious about others, telling stories, serving in any way he could. This week, like all weeks at the ranch, felt like a tribute to him. I’ve never been quite so present. Whether I was making the other guests and staff coffee in my Unimatic, practicing barrels, out on a ride with Mom or sitting around that magical campfire.
This Father’s Day, whether you have a Dad to hug or would prefer to skip this day altogether… I hope you were present. I hope you spent quality time with someone (or with yourself). I hope you reconnected somehow, like we got to. And I hope you resolve to make a practice of it, #overcoffee going forward. Because there is nothing quite like being where your feet are. Trust me, sometimes I need the reminder as well.
Raising our mugs to Dads and all the father figures out there. Thank you for being present, instilling values that we get to carry on forever, and recognize when we find a place or a person that mirrors them back. Thank you for helping us recognize what it means to find a “home” in a place, a person or even in oneself.
Missing you Dad, I’ll keep on coming up with crazy ideas and making magic like we always talked about, over coffee. Thanks for keeping your hand on my shoulder and being present, in your own special way, even now. 🌹
